Why Choose a Sand Ceremony at the Gold Coast

The Gold Coast has some of the best beaches in the world and a sand ceremony at the Gold Coast is a beautiful way to personalise your marriage ceremony, especially if you have chosen a beach wedding.

What is a Sand Ceremony

A Sand Ceremony or Blending of the Sand is a unique way  to personalise your wedding and symbolise your two lives becoming one. There are many variations on the sand ceremony, but they all involve pouring various colours of sand into a jar or bottle to display later in your home.

Simple Sand Ceremonies

The simplest form of sand ceremony involves just the couple getting married. They each choose a colour of sand. First of all, they take turns pouring the two colours of sand into the jar in layers. These individual layers represent their separate lives up until their wedding day. To finish the ceremony, they pour their sand together so that the colours mix together. This symbolises that, just like the blended sand grains can’t be sorted out into two separate colours, so the couple’s lives will also be forever joined together. Sometimes, I will pour the first sand into the jar, usually a layer of beach sand for a sand ceremony at the Gold Coast, but occasionally fine white sand. The beach sand represents the love and trust that form the foundation of the marriage. Once the beach sand is in place, the couple start pouring their coloured sand.

Ceremonies With Children

A sand ceremony at the Gold Coast is an excellent way to include children in your wedding, particularly if you have children from previous relationships. Each child can choose a colour of sand they like. Once you and your partner have each poured a layer of your coloured sand, each child can pour their sand into the jar and then you can pour your blended colours on top. This symbolises that each child is unique as they each have their own colour of sand, but that they are all valued members of your family. You and your partner have your colours of sand both below and above the children’s sand in the jar to show that they will always be surrounded by your love. If you don’t want a separate colour for each child, you could suggest that the children to pour a single colour of sand, representing them as a family as well as any children you and your partner might have in the future.

Ceremonies With Other People

A sand ceremony  at the Gold Coast is also a perfect way to involve friends and family members in your marriage ceremony on the beach. Maybe you can choose a representative from your family and from your partner’s family. They each pour a colour of sand on behalf of the whole family to show that your marriage joins the two families together. Perhaps you can choose a friend to pour sand on behalf of all your guests. Their sand represents all the love and happiness that your family and friends are wishing you on your wedding day.

Sand Ceremony Equipment

You don’t need to spend a lot of money to have a beautiful and meaningful sand ceremony. Complete kits are available online, but many couples just buy a jar or bottle from a homewares store and purchase the sand either from a specialty wedding shop or buy it online. Make sure that each person pouring sand has their own colour and check that they are colours you like. Remember the sand jar will be a lasting memento of your wedding day and will be in your home for a long time.

You will also need some small jars to hold the various colours of sand being poured, one for each colour. Three things to think about – make sure the sand ceremony jar has a nice wide mouth to make pouring sand into it easy, make sure it has a cork or screw-on cap so you can transport it without spilling and make sure it is the right size. If your jar is too big, you will need a lot of sand to fill it but if it’s too small, you might not fit in all your colours of sand.

Where Does the Sand Ceremony Fit

There are no hard and fast rules about where to place the sand ceremony within your marriage ceremony. I usually place it towards the end of the ceremony, after the more traditional elements like vows and the exchange of rings and usually after the couple has signed the marriage documents but before I introduce them to their guests for the first time as a married couple.
